PostgreSQL version 15 was released and made available on October 13, 2022. PostgreSQL, the most advanced open source database, brought many new features with its 15th version.
PostgreSQL 15 New Features
Merge Command
With the release of PostgreSQL 15, the Merge command was also made available. MERGE allows you to write a conditional SQL query that can include insert, update and delete operations in a single SQL query.
New Regexp Functions
The regular expression functions regexp_count(), regexp_instr(), regexp_like(), and regexp_substr() are included with PostgreSQL 15.
Speed Increase in Data Sorting Operations
With the improvements made in the algorithms in sorting the data, a speed increase between 25% and 400% was achieved depending on the data type. Parallel execution feature in select distinct operations has been added.
Logical Replication
Table, column and row based replication feature has been introduced in Logical Replication operations. Replication can be done by entering the condition for the desired rows.
Compression
Support for LZ4 and Zstandard (zstd) algorithms has been added to compress WAL files. In backups made with pg_basebackup(), compression can be done by selecting the desired algorithms from gzip, LZ4, and zstd algorithms.
